I was a psych major.
I think I'm pretty normal.
Most of my friends in the department were pretty normal and still are, even the ones with PhDs.
As normal as any of the other majors; there are plenty of weirdos to go around.
My kids are pretty normal.
My husband is obnoxiously normal.
You all really went off the wall with this one.
As soon as they let me out of this hospital, I'm coming to get you.

Seriously, I think this is a case of seeing something that only appears to be more prevalent because it's contrary to the expected behavior of that field.
Like accountants who don't balance their checkbooks, plumbers with leaky faucets.

Neocon, I remember that the Psych majors were the students who could not make a choice. I once had a Psychiatrist tell
me that to even attempt to psychoanalyze oneself would be dangerous..That is what happened to Sigmund Freud..what do you think :-) SD

In one clinical Ph.D. program, there was a class that I knew very well. I know for certain of two divorces, one person who was himself institutionalized, and one suicide. And this was a small class....

There are plenty of balanced people in the field as well. But the extremity of some of the unbalanced I found remarkable.
