Paul, I don't think Intel faces the same types of competitive pressures as Oracle---not even close.
Oracle has to deal with ever increasing cheap databases from MSFT--SQL Server 7.0---cuts into profits and revenues. If Intel was to just meet estimates and issue a positive forward looking statement, the stock would probably go up. The same may not be true of most technology companies. It is matter of market dominance and management credibility. Intel has both.

AMD is not a Microsoft or IBM.

Intel could probably increase prices on the high end chips and the unit sales may not drop in any significant way. It still has that "intel inside" brand that will attract customers even if an AMD chip is cheaper. It has not faced the type of negative publicity that Microsoft has faced and therefore its great image is intact.
How many people who are going to spend at least $1000 on a computer will pick an AMD chip? I feeling is that in the minds of customers, they would pay a little bit more just to get the Intel inside.

I have not mentioned Intel's advertising. That will only reinforce the idea of why one should buy a computer with an Intel CPU. These guys are brilliant, IMHO.
