if anything, that's bad news for traditional brokerages.
i don't care at this point if the commission is $ 29, $ 19, $ 5 or zero, as long as i have fast executions, a responsive site, level ii quotes and other services, and my money in a company i can trust.
i doubt an "El Cheapo" company offering free trades, will be able, at the same time, to offer all the other services we have now at E*Trade.
on the other hand, they are offering almost free PCs right now, free internet access, free operating systems (Linux), free software (Sun Microsystem's StarOffice, etc), free downloadable music (mp3s), free news all over the net, even free int'l phone calls (Net2Phone), etc. etc.
but as far as i know, all that didn't put much of a dent into the stock prices of Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, Dell, AOL, Sony, Dow Jones, AT&T, etc etc.
