I think this is the furthest from the truth. Qualcomm never thought that they could make any real money on ASICs. That's why the ASIC group wasn't properly staffed and run by a bunch of yahoos until just a couple of years ago. I think Qualcomm was trying to make a serious run at the infrastructure and handset markets. That's where most of the employees were. Once the handset business is sold, Qualcomm will probably have only 20% of their employees left. As a long term QCOM investor, I'd like to believe that what we are witnessing this year is part of a long term plan, but that's just not accurate.

chaz, Did you suggest that Sir Dell might want to get into phone production? I wasn't sure. Think about it from Dell's view, PC sales are growing but have moderated and wireless phone sales continue to explode. It may sound far fetched but this type of move might diversify his production base. But I guess his supply channel is direct, so not sure if this would work. Any thoughts? Just thinking out loud.
