. . . . . . . . . Looked into Fuel Cells. . . . . . . . . Good news and Bad news. . . which one you want first? OK, here is the bad news. . . There are very few publicly traded fuel cell companies. Most are power companies with one foot into fuel cells. . . [some have more feet than others]. . .There are conglomerates like UTX. . . . and power companies like DTE; IDA [bought Northwest power Systems]; GPU or ENE. There is a group of companies that get lumped in because they have related products. . . but they are hardly fuel cell companies. . . MEOH; CTAL; EFCX; . . . fine for momentum plays. . .but don't get caught holding the bag. There is also one that is being touted around the boards, called DCH Technologies [OTC: DCHT] that claims to have submitted their first financial filing to the SEC, but I cannot seem to find it. . . .so until we see financials on the Edgars this one will not be considered. They have products that were purchased by legitimate companies, so this one is worth looking into as a pure play, IF we can see their financials. Now the good news. . . . . I did find a few that look interesting. One pure play that is public is a Canadian company called Ballard Power [Nasdaq: BLDP]. Its revs aren't much, and though they are rising, the company is still losing money in a big way. However. . . .the following is a gem find. . . IMO. Plug Power was founded two years ago by DTE Energy Co. (DTE), otherwise known as Detroit Power. Plug Power is building a new fuel cell manufacturing plant, and it has contracted General Electric Power System, a unit of General Electric Co. (GE), to sell the units. "GE FUEL CELLS" is the name of the product to be manufactured by Plug Power. Mechanical Technology, Inc. [MKTY] had been paying the bills for Plug Power, as that privately owned company struggled to become the leading manufacturer of fuel cells. I would guess MKTY got tired of paying the bills and just bought the whole company. So the end of August, they announced the purchase of Plug Power. Now. . . listen closely. . . At that time, they also announced that they had applied for an initial public offering of Plug Power. Now, since there are very few legitimate pure plays in fuel cell manufacturers, when Plug Power hits the streets, I think we will have another Red Hat on our hands. And as the hype leads up to the IPO [whenever it is], I would expect MKTY to rise easily, until the IPO hits the street. . . then it will be all Plug Power. . .in a similar way as NTOP left IDTC in the dust.
