George, a comment about tech stocks generally

agree almost 100% that in time most techs become smelly tuna in need of the disposal for mulch

take the "end-all" ATM asynchronous transfer mode networking that is now giving way to packet switching... take nifty Digital VMS operating system that gave way to simpler Unix with vendor independence, or better yet to shitty but standard MS Windows... take PC Utilities like Norton (Symantec), Quarterdeck, Stac which gave way to inferior bundling (bungling) by MS Windows operating system... take single fiber optic technology that gave way to wavelength division multiplexing... as these companies give way to the new, their stock prices give it all away

but in the last decade a real phenomenon has taken hold of the technology world -- Darwinism... it is characterized by survival and total dominance by the leader in market share... it is a winner take all world now with standard ownership or standard exploitation... emergence of standards dictates now that the herd follow the "winning standard" whether it is...

MS Windows software and its attendent substandard suites
Intel's 486, Pentium, Celluron chips
IP routers and networks (not owned by Cisco, but exploited)
Unix servers (not owned by Sun Micro, but exploited)
cached smart storage (not owned by EMC, but exploited)

in today's environment, the owner of the emerging standard is likely to become a BEHEMOTH over time... the early signals indicate CDMA will prevail internationally... other developments in devices such as handheld PC's, and in systems like email, internet access, file synchronization, voice recognition only accentuate the importance and extent of that dominance

CSCO has taken the game one step further, as has MCI/Worldcom... as their stock mktcap becomes enormous, they have used their valuable currency to buy up all potential competition and their potential competing technology... note Cisco last month buying a small firm for the purpose of breaking into the fiberoptic interface of network switching... wow... Darwinism used to an art form... THIS STRATEGY EXTENDS THE SHELF LIFE OF TUNA

this QCOM gorilla has a long long way to run... I dont expect to smell tuna in her track until at least y2008

survival and dominance of the standard owner
