And so, as our story opens, our hero, The Duke of URL, the daring and resourceful masked rider of the plains, (drum roll) finds the he has accidently been cast backwards in time to ............UNIXVILLE!!!

Come with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear, as we hear Duke say:

MeDroogies, if I may call you that......

MeDroogies: We don't give money to those who answer the needs...we give money to those who CONVINCE us they've answered the needs, or who MANIPULATE the system to make it SEEM like they've answered the needs.

Duke: It may seem like to you but trust me on this one, the way things work in America is that no amount of deceptive advertising will make a pig into a soccerball. Eventually, and sometimes very quickly, the BEST.....how should I say, WINS. Peter eventually has to talk to Paul. The only exception to this rule is political protectionism, such as the RBOCs enjoy, and certainly you will agree Bill doesn't have that.

MeDroogies: Sony didn't create video tape...or even VCRs.

Duke: No they created the.....BETA FORMAT.

MeDroogies: BBBut, Dell didn't create computers.

Duke: No, he created a deliver system.

One of Bill's visions is to create cheap and easy to use software. Being a visionary can sometimes be looking at things as they are and changing them to things that will be.

MeDroogies: He bought, stole, and weaseled, that Droogette!!! and cheated others out of their good ideas (well...harsh word, because Gates is the highest form of flattery for Apple).and cheated others out of their good ideas (well...harsh word, because Gates is the highest form of flattery for Apple).

Duke: You are of course referring to Jobs epiphany of GUI, RIGHT AFTER BOTH HE AND GATES BOTH VISITED ZEROX PARC, no doubt.

Did you know that that the first operating system written for APPL was written by MSFT? Alas, advertising, no matter how good will not work to sell a POS product in the long run.

....And with that, the Dukester vanished into thin air.

About the NC-"debacle".

From Red Herring

LOS ANGELES -- "We went down a rabbit hole with the
network computer," says Jeremy Burton, Oracle
(ORCL) vice president for server marketing. "But
what the NC diversion allowed us to do was focus on
thin clients." He was fending off an onslaught of
reporters flooding into Oracle's black-curtained booth
at Spring Internet World '99 in Los Angeles.

In a moment of pure candor, Mr. Burton acknowledges
that Oracle had a lot to learn about becoming an
applications company. "The model was what we should
have focused on, not the device," admits Mr. Burton.

I forgive them their mistake. You need luck to become nr. 1.
Ask Bill.
