yeah, I actually read all of them. what happened was this: I came in around 4800 or so and started following it daily. Learned inter alia about the high regard everyone had for Q. Then Mike thanked somebody (Teflon? Cha2? I forget) for some good information or analysis, and the poster responded by saying something like, "hell, it's nothing, we're all still in your debt for post 833." So, curious, I went back to post 833 and started reading. It was great fun--riveting, really, to watch the sighting of a gorilla in the mist in real time--but I felt like I came into a great movie ten minutes late (hate that!). So I went back to the beginning and read straight through over the course of about a week. It was a cliffhanger, like those 19th century novels that came out in serials: I wanted to act on all the stuff I was learning, but was terrified that some post later on would reveal a pothole or something, so I had to get to the present just to be safe! I swear, somebody should publish the thread as an epistolary novel--complete with sound (the "Magilla Gorilla" theme, in context, was both exhilirating and moving) and pictures (love the hamster dance!). There were even great little emotional subplots along the way (would Teflon and Cha2 [or was it Chas?] make up? Would Lindy go the full 100% monty? would Seibel trounce Vantage? would Geoff Moore realize the error of his ways?)... I have to say, it was fun but lousy for my summer's productivity... :) What does a foreign policy wonk do? Well, basically, figure out what our foreign policy should be and try to convince the powers that be that he's right. Where did I learn argumentation? I suppose grad school, chiefly--nice to know the social sciences are good for something--combined with endless day in, day out, involvement in scholarly and policy debates over the last dozen years. I'll tell you this: if Mike B. every wants to stop selling carpets, he can get a lot of other jobs pretty quick.... I've shown his best posts to some very impressive people and they were blown away.... But I haven't just learned from Mike. Take Lindy: from him I've learned about temperament and having courage in one's convictions (well, until this week! <g>). Or you--usually courtesy and gentility personified, providing a real collective good for all. And of course, all the rest, from whom I've learned more than I thought possible about the technology of dozens of companies and the ins and outs of investing. As for the wife, well, she's not too happy about this particular obsession, since she's convinced it's all just gambling and that I'm just procrastinating (well, partly true in both cases! <vbg>). I try to show her how the performance of my (little) account is blowing away the performance of her (larger, index-heavy) account, but she just fumes and says she doesn't want to hear about it until I have a multi-year track record of outperformance to prove her wrong. Since she's as smart as I am and much more responsible, I can't really disagree, so I'm just hoping we're all right about the Q's short-term prospects (so I can convince her) and long-term prospects (so I can still make some money when she lets me have more cash to invest! <vvvbg!>). tekboy
