Viva la France - pays to pick your Keynote locations

And it doesn't hurt to have IBM along demo'ing a French version of Via Voice:

" France launches investigation of Microsoft

PARIS (September 17, 1999 5:51 p.m. EDT nandotimes.com) - The French Finance Ministry on Friday said its antitrust, fraud, and market surveillance agencies are investigating consumers' complaints about the business practices of U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp.

The investigation follows complaints from French consumers who have said they don't want to have to buy Microsoft Windows software every time they buy a computer, said a Finance Ministry official who spoke on the customary condition of anonymity.

The government is examining Microsoft practices in what the official said was a routine effort to ensure the proper functioning of the economy and French markets."

That'll learn ya MSFT to not mess with MOT's Symbian partnership.

There is no sound in jack on a iBook - why is IBM demo'ing Via Voice at iBook shows ?

<<Wouldn't an "insanely great" AAPL PDA leapfrog current technology if it had voice I/O - particularly if IBM was included ?>>

All they have to do is put a 400 Mhz G3 chip in it and IBM is automatically included.

It's too obvious to ignore even though no one is talking much about it.

-Low power, cool-running G3 chips
-Handheld with Mac OS (Sys 6.05, 7.5, 8.2 or X?)
-Backward compatibility to all the old Mac titles (MS Word 5.0 on a handheld running 400 Mhz - it was designed for Macs at 66 Mhz - spellchecks and such would be instantaneous!)
-Voice activation, digital record and playback features
-Cool colors
-(here's a new one to throw in) compatibility with Handspring Visor's plug-in modules. Heck there's enough speed to run Palm OS in emulation mode!
-Newton handwriting recognition

I'd buy one today if they developed it?

Wouldn't an "insanely great" AAPL PDA leapfrog current technology if it had voice I/O ...

This kind of PDA already exists. It's called a cellphone. It might be worth your while to check out the threads at Nokia and Qualcomm. You'll be amazed to see how far cellphones have developed. You can already surf the Internet on a cellphone (admittedly, it's still slow and text-based -- kinda like PCs & the Internet in the mid-90s, but it's only going to get better).

Judgding by the way their development is going, I'd say cellphones are going to give PDA manufacturers a hell of a run for the money. So, unless things change significantly, I think Apple's $$$ is better spent at figuring out how to ride on the cellphone wave in ways yet unthought of. Now, that would be really thinking different ;)
