Here is a weekend report on disk drive pricing at distributors.

Pricing was much more aggressive during the last week. Prices dropped at the monthly rate of 8% over the last week. This is the steepest decline since early August. The actual price declines were only about 4% over the last four weeks because of more stable prices in the previous weeks. The average price decline over the past two years is about 6% per month. Maxtor, IBM and Fujitsu experienced the largest price declines.

Some distributors had a high disk drive change over. The new drives are not reflected in this report because I do not have previous prices. One distributor dropped many low price drives and started a new line of drives with similar capacities at higher prices. Another started a new line of IBM drives in the 18 to 36 gb range.
