Sony Computer May Start Making Digital Movies, Nikkei Says

Tokyo, Sept. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., maker of the PlayStation video game console, may start producing digital movies as early as 2002, the Nihon Keizai newspaper said, citing the company's president Ken Kutaragi. Sony Computer has already contacted George Lucas, director of the Star Wars movies, and other major film directors. The move also ties in with plans to use the PlayStation2, an upgraded version of the video game, to play movies delivered digitally over cable TV lines as early as 2001, the report said.

PlayStation 2, which will sell for 39,800 yen ($371) from March 2000, will be equipped with a digital video-disc player capable of playing movies and music, as well as existing PlayStation software. (Nihon Keizai, 9/18, p.9)(www.nikkei.co.jp)
