unclewest:
If Samsung is far and ahead market leader in RDRAM volume production, there has to be reason why they waited their time and just recently selected Slumberger as test equipment vendor.
The only RAM manufacturer that has selected HP for RDRAM testing is LGS. They made their selection a while ago and are no where on radar screen to volume production. Two of the three RAM chip manufacturers who will begin volume shipments of 128 Mbit RDRAM this year, Samsung and NEC, have selected Slumberger. The third, Toshiba has not announced or ordered any equipment but I am sure that will be done shortly.
I am no expert in memory test equipment but it seems odd that HP has not won or announced any any sales in a while.
I will be much more versed in this matter after the 28th after attending the ITC show in Atlantic City.
In conclusion, RDRAM volume production is assured, but just don't get your hopes up of seeing RDRAM machines in CompUSA this year for Rambus or even regular Christmas. I only see small volumes of computers with RDRAM leaving a system vendor's assembly line with Dec 1 as the earliest possible shipping date. I don't want to seem like a gloomy gus but Intel is not going to let Christmas season get away from them waiting for RDRAM still in ramp up production phase in Korea or Japan. SDRAM will dominate the 4Q selling season. No appreciable RDRAM will show until about January.
