MSFT makes another acquisition:

Microsoft Buys Assets of Softway, Gets Unix-Windows Tools

Redmond, Washington, Sept. 17 (Bloomberg) - Microsoft Corp., the world's biggest software maker, bought the assets of closely held Softway Systems Inc. to get tools that allow its Windows system to work with other applications.

Terms weren't disclosed. San Francisco-based Softway makes products that allow Microsoft's Windows and the Unix computer- operating system to work together, so clients can run Unix applications on the Windows system.

The transaction gives Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft another tool to reach large customers who use a variety of systems. Microsoft said it's also working with other companies to boost compatibility between Windows and Unix.

Members of Softway's development team and some other employees will join Microsoft.

Microsoft rose 2 7/16 to 96 7/16. The purchase was announced after the close of regular U.S. trading.
