<<scaling a desktop OS down to a handheld form factor is a really dumb idea.>>

You have a very good point there.

Here's where AAPL already has the resources and creating an OS would not be difficult for them.

The fine folks who brought you the Palm Pilot and Handspring are the same folks who were working on the Newton OS. Ever notice that the Palm OS is very similar to the Newton? That's not a coincidence.

The only diversion was the handwriting interface. Otherwise, the virtual keyboard and layout of applications looks pretty mush the same.

Also, a deal was cut last year with Palm to integrate Claris Organizer into the Palm OS.

If it's that simple to integrate a desktop app into the Palm, I don't think AAPL would have any trouble retrofitting a new Apple handheld OS from Newton compatibility to Mac OS-based apps.

There is already a Newton emulator shareware out there that runs on PowerPC. It's not difficult to develop a dual OS handheld based on the PowerPC. With that much speed and computing power, you can run a Palm emulator and have speed to run several other OS platforms as well.

Your menu palette or even hardware buttons can give you MacOS, Palm, Psion or Motorola Pagewriter 2000! All of these take less than a megabyte (WinCE - you might as well be loading Win 3.11 or slimmed down 95.)

-Just some thoughts to kick around.

Maybe Apple will buy out PalmComputing after it spins off
3com. Steve wanted to buy Palm from 3com before. Now he
will have the chance.
