Athlon no longer "THE FASTEST CPU IN ALL THE LAND".

Alpha Processor, Inc. (API), debuting the fastest processor in the world
running at room temperature
- the 1GHz Alpha 21264 processor - utilizes Flotherm
thermal management software from Flomerics to analyse the cooling requirements
of its record-breaking processor, which runs at nearly twice the speed of
today's fastest Intel Xeon solution.

Tejek,

Re:"Intel as chipzilla"

Yes, they are formidable.

As u and i know this is time of year to negotiate the Q4 buys.

Intel I am sure wanted to leverage its high end CPU availability to cut a deal for maximum volumes.

Gateway wanted to lower its chip prices and ensure it got adequate Coppermine 733's by leveraging lower prices from AMD.

And I am sure they are both happy with AMD on the outside looking in.

Remember AMD cut a similar deal with IBM, where they are going solely with AMD CPU's in it consumer segment. Wouldn't surprise me if AMD had to promise adequate availability of 650's to cut that deal and may expalin why Compaq isn't getting 650's.

This type of deal is done all the time.

As far as Gateway promising never to use AMD again. They would never do that- they would lose pricing leverage.

regards,

kash
