Les had you read the article in today's WSJ page C1 "How Pension Surpluses Lift Earnings" I was making this statement for close of a year now and posted this fact on The Chicken page for several months. Now it is "formal" <G> Interestingly my beloved Lucent is mentioned there which overstated operating income by only a meager 17.5%. Not accounting for those accounting trick LU actual operating income is 15% less. And surprise surprise on the SPX 500 pension plans surpluses added around 3% in earnings for 1998. Wonder how nobody on this tread posted it. Haim
