I didn't like this comment that you made to JDN:

[ You buy the cheap Linux CDs and a couple hundred dollars worth of books. Then you spend hundreds of hours learning Unix (deliberately). Then, after you still can't get PPP configuration right (never mind sound) you go to a Linux Installfest and have a professional do it for you for a bag of cookies.]

So why learn how to play the piano? You could buy a player piano?

Why grow your own roses? You could buy books with pictures of roses. Or you could buy plastic roses for the garden?

Why study computer science?

When you run out of fingers and toes, you can add, subtract, multiply and divide with small stones.

Why insult Mr. Mephisto by calling him a geek? Is it his fault that he has no financial support for Sun machines or UNIX shell accounts? He has to pay for his own books. He has to buy his own PCs.

[If Sun is so hot to get researchers on Solaris, why doesn't Sun (and the other big PC companies) provide (some) equipment, and a UNIX SHELL ACCOUNT?]

The bottom line is government and industry do NOT support basic research. Even Bill Gates has noticed and worried about the lack of support.

Politicans are too busy lining their own pockets with pension, raises, and huge expense accounts. And business gives away stock options that cost shareholders a great deal of money.

As Brian says when his company goes public, he can retire (for a couple of years, anyway)!!!
