alta vista made their download really small but then left it up to users to upgrade dlls and other supporting files if they don't have a recent version of windows 98. check microav.com for details about the files and other altavista freeaccess issues.

AOL really sucks here in Canada. they don't have a unlimited connection plan here, and their prices are higher than most isp guys in town. i used to use AOL 3 or 4 years ago, but they sill keep mail me AOL disks or CDs every other month or so. last month they started a door to door AOL 540-free-hour CD delivery Campaign in my area, and you know what: i got 3 aol CDs in a month -- they must spent a lot of moneiiiiy on this. i use cable modem now, will never goback to aol. i helped a friend of mine setup a free try of AOL 4 last month. my impression is not much improvement, slow and hard to get around. he canceled his account and went for cable.

I would consider using AOL if I don't have to download special software to do so. Could I get an AOL account without that AOL 4.0 crap? Also, does any one notice AOL tends to lose e-mail messages?

I have been using AOL since early 98 and to my knowledge have not had an email lost. Aol does seem to have a problem with getting bulk-type email(newsletters, etc.) to you in a timely fashion. One of the major complaints in the past was busy signals. I live in a metropolitan area and so would expect some busy signals during peak web-usage hours but have not had this happen more than a handfull of times in 2 years. I tried the three you mentioned (Vista, Zero, and Prodigy)and I agree with you on all three...bad experience. I do not believe it is possible to access aol without their software but can you access the great majority of isp's without same? Go ahead and give it a try...250 hours now available on free trial basis. I know you won't have a problem getting an installation disc....they're everywhere! LOL
