I am only out of order if I am trying to impose something special to a denomination on the public. Otherwise, I am at liberty to advance my position without being denounced as "religious" or "mystical". Even were my convictions buttressed by religious belief, it would be no great matter, just as few would object to the involvement of churches in black voter registration and desegregation in the '60s, as long as I am appealing to common values. But the main thing is that most policy questions are about "scruples", that is, disagreements over were to draw a line, so it is idle to object that I am trying to impose my views: everyone is. Perhaps this quote from a previous post will help:

The pragmatic argument breaks down. Social utility? Why should I care? Besides, why not make it open season on street people, they are parasites and no one will miss them? Heck, in Rio, they have been murdering street urchins as a form of public spiritedness, clearing the town of riff- raff!Because it is evil..... We formulate laws in order to uphold values, because we think that it is better to be one kind of society than another.....
