LL,
I have two chargers, one in the car that I can use while talking that takes about 15 minutes to fully charge the battery. The other is a trickle charger using 120 that is also usable while talking. They both shut off when the bat is full.
I guess it isn't a big issue for me because I am in the car often enough to get a quick charge. There are solar battery chargers available for wilderness use. Actually some Iridium sat phones are equipped. I have a calculator on my desk that is solar/battery and it never needs charging. Why not in the cell phone? Probably the collector size would be huge for the size battery that is used.
Globalstar satelite network has plans for remote area pay phones that will be solar powered, however they will have lots of area for collectors.
Everybody I know has a cell phone and nobody is complaining about battery life.
