If I find out my G4 won't ship until April, isn't that a bunch of time for me to go find something else?

Why didn't you pick something else in the first place?

The G4 is still going to be the hottest desktop computer in the world when it comes out in April, or next Christmas, or whenever. If you want to settle, settle. People who NEED the SPEED will wait. Simple.

STAY LONG; STAY STRONG.

<<Why doesn't anyone think this is a serious problem for Apple?>>

Because it's business as usual for AAPL. They said the same thing about the G3, and the Powerbooks, and the Strong ARM chips for the Newton.

It makes the stock dip a bit, but it comes back up when earnings are shown to be "better than expected".

>April

I don't know, did someone say it would take that long?

>something else

where you gonna go? Unless you buy a PC that is ;-) SJ took care of that problem.

From what I see, G4 buyers are serious users who are in deep. G4 probs shouldn't show consumer probs much. I'll admit I don't track this as much as I should... I just like the management of AAPL.

(heck, I don't even own or use a Mac)

Could it all be to get Big Blue's G4 attention - IBM has the Power4

Its doubtful IBM wants to pay MOT for its AltiVec technology (IBM has its own vector chips) and remains apart from the G4 citing a conflict with its other products.

AMD is using IBM's copper fab techniques , is beholden to IBM in other ways , and MOT recently tried to sub-lease some of AMD's Dressden Germany Althon fab lab in order to increase G4 production. So far AMD is keeping a vacancy .

AAPL didn't help MOT by going "public" with the G4 delays and MOT may now have to turn to IBM :

====
" While the G3 chip used in most Mac models is manufactured by both IBM and Motorola, the former has so far declined to produce the G4, leaving Apple dependent on Motorola as sole supplier for the crucial part. "
