There is no trace of heroes in animal Kingdom.
Au contrair, the classic heros are the honeybees. Their stinger is barbed such that if they sting in defense of the hive, their death is assured. They give no thought to the action, this is a product of pure DNA, one lesson per generation. The result of the lesson is :

if I have saved 8 cousins, or 4 sisters I have saved as many genes as if I saved myself. An animal with a few more neurons could make a more complex choice as it saves ideas as well as DNA.

I never said that all altruism is the result of gene selfishness. Protecting strangers is called being human.
