Unfortunately, the reality is different from (and uglier than) maintream scholarship. Palestinians and Jews lived together quite amicably until Zionists entered the picture. Had the Zionists acted in a civil manner, the Middle East would be a different place. One would think this oppressed minority would have more empathy for other minorities, not less.

Arab nationalism poisoned relations between Jews and their Arab neighbors... When the State of Israel was declared, the Arab media passed the word that there would be a general slaughter of Jews, and that local Arabs should get out of the way. It is true that in the conflict some Jews, mainly from the Irgun, drove out Arabs, but most scholars agree that the bulk of them left expecting it to be temporary, in panic at the impending attack.

Look for a book called The Gun and the Olive Branch, by David Hirst. Excellent scholarship, everything in it cited and supported. Disturbing material.

I know it's a different period, but does the name Deir Yassin mean anything to you?

When the State of Israel was declared, the Arab media passed the word that there would be a general slaughter of Jews, and that local Arabs should get out of the way.

This has been completely debunked.

"Thousands of documents in the state and Zionist archives, as well as Ben-Gurion's war diaries, show no evidence to support Israeli claims [that Arab leaders ordered the Palestinians to flee]. In fact, among these sources are documents testifying to the considerable effort of the AHC (Arab Higher Committee) and the Arab states to constrain the flight."

Israeli historian Simha Flapan, "The Birth of Israel", p.85

"There is repeated monitored record of Arab appeals, even flat orders, to the civilians of Palestine to stay put."

Erskine Childers, "The Other Exodus"
