Very exciting news. AirTouchSatServices has renamed itself GlobalstarUSA and created a corresponding web site:

www.globalstarusa.com

So I did a little "Friendly User Test" of the site and offer these comments. Hope someone at G* USA is reading!

1. Distributors. Of the listed distributors, only GMPCS has G* info. The O'Gara link takes you to a bunch of INMARSAT/Iridium stuff; the Wireless Store and AirStar sites are under construction and the Airtouch Cellular site has nothing concrete about G* service

2. The long-awaited coverage map has several surprises or errors:

Coverage in Peru at service launch but not in Argentina. Partial coverage in Australia at service launch, not nationwide even by y/e 2000. Nationwide coverage also not available by y/e 2000 in Brazil, Russia and China. And no N. Atlantic coverage by y/e 2000. And it's certainly not clear which countries are anticipated to be actually licensed as opposed to happening to be within 1500miles of a GW.

3. Products. There's some info about the QComm fixed and mobile user terminals, but nothing concrete about the "car kit". IMO, few N. American users will buy a mobile handset w/o car kit.

The FAQ provides detailed rollout plan, which is a step forward, but the impatient among us will not be pleased by it:

Globalstar plans a phased rollout to meet customer requirements beginning in late 4Q. (!)

Phase 1 - Friendly user trials; collecting customer feedback on
network performance at no cost to the customer
Phase 2 - Soft Launch; limited commercial launch to key customers
that have requested to be early users of the system
Phase 3 - Commercial Launch; aggressively marketing products to
targeted customer segments

Well, any news is better than no news...

<<Vodafone AirTouch Satellite Services Changes Name to Globalstar USA>>

Great news, David; thanks. Noticed in the most recent Kipplinger's Report a bullet about watching for worldwide sat phone service in October or November from GlobalStar. Tone indicated that G* is the sat phone service that will play. ...Tim

''According to Paul Kagan and Associates, only 29 percent of the United States has
access to wireless services,' said Kerr.

Even a G* bull like me has trouble defending this figure.

I checked out a few of Kagan's many web offerings. His company provides seminars, newsletters and "databooks" for entertainment, cable and wireless industries among others. For 795$ you can buy

UPDATED & EXPANDED 8TH EDITION
NOW AVAILABLE!

Market Ownership and Demographic
Data for 734 Cellular Markets in the U.S.
and Territories

kagan.com

One would like to think those in a position to pay his rates feel they get what they pay for.

However, according to Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association statistics as of 12/98, the US industry had 66K "Cell sites" (and a cum. cap. investment of over 60B$(!))

If each cell site covered a five mile radius with no overlap they would cover 150% of the total lower 48 states area. Of course, there's a LOT of overlap, and we know that plenty of areas don't have coverage, but 70% of the US? (especially excluding Alaska, which G* also doesn't cover)

Any telecom wonks care to comment?

Just shorted 5000 shares at $26.25 for 1 week until 9/30/99 while keeping my long position. Main reasons.
1. Portfolio managers who may want to add G* shares will wait until the new Q499, mid-10/99 service start and Telecom '99 press releases pumping G*.
2. G* stock price has declined in the face of good news, i.e., VOD/Bell Atlantic partnership, early 9/99 analyst conference, successful launch, analyst buy/reit buy recs. Brokerages and analysts have already moved clients into G* for the time being.
3. Slower initial roll-out than anticipated. Again, portfolio managers will delay their G* purchases.
4. G* has used up its press releases until the 10/10/99 Telecom '99 conference.
5. Potential news on Iridium and ICO restructuring plans may impact G* stock price.
6. General market uncertainty, early warnings season in late 9/99 and fears of 10/5 FOMC rate hike.

Comments on any of the above items appreciated.
I'll continue to post ALL news relevant to G* as usual, djane
