Alohal:

Thanks for your update on your Inspiron delay due to the factory in Taiwan burning down that supplied the shells. That is indeed disturbing. I am surprised that they revised their delivery date by only one month. Maybe they can source the shells somewhere else.

When I had the plant tour in Austin in July, they said that they had two suppliers for desktop cases. They also said that for laptops they were doing more of the final assembly in the US now, but that the shells still come from Taiwan. I bet they (and a lot of other PC manufacturers) are scrambling to find alternative suppliers. JIT inventory control has got DELL to where it is today, but it also leaves them vulnerable to unpredictable events like this earthquake. Just when they were coming out with colorful laptop cases too!

Many analysts now predict higher prices for computer chips due to the catastrophic earthquake. If so, this would not bode well for box makers as the the costs of goods would rise accordingly.
