as we should or could be. This bothers me.<

It bothers me too. But I think there is a strong ostrich urge to think of our current society as "civilized". Every time there is a burglary or armed robbery - that concept is made a lie.

Until violent crime is truly an aberration - I contend that we are as civilized as we make ourselves. And removing the right to carry a gun in such an environment is a disservice.

Ours is NOT a civilized society ... so we must defend our right to self-defense until the NEED for self-defense becomes a thing of the past. And that won't happen in my lifetime.

Yes, "innoculated" by gun against uncivility does seem harsh, but everybody fell for the polio vaccine, smallpox etc. While the argument you make is strong that this society does not want to admit to it's growing failures, I submit that it could, by the same fears that allow its manipulation by gun-control eventually try the other side, much as we see the pendulum swing on politics in general.

Obviously some states have had some success, such as Florida with nearly 500,000 carry permits.

In a civilized world? We aren't in a civilized world, no matter how much we claim to be. In a civilized world no one would be robbing, rapping, kidnapping, or killing others. No wars would be fought. After all almost every "civilized" society has managed to kill off an "uncivilized".
society.

Case in point, I don't see any more Aztecs or Mayan Tribes running around. Only a few descendents are left from those societies.
