Do handguns serve a purpose other than killing people?

The title says it all. I am baffled by the presence of handguns, in all honesty I am baffled by the presence of all guns. However, people can claim they use rifles for hunting, which most people do. That will create issues which people will not touch at the moment should the U.S. Government try to ban all guns. However, my faith in the U.S. Government is slipping, very, very quickly. How is it that they do not pass a bill that requires back checks on people buying guns at shows. How much is the gun lobby paying them? The claim can be made that handguns are for self-protection. But that protection is protection from other people with handguns. Other cases which may apply are the need of a woman to carry a handgun in a large city. In response to that, Mace can be used to deter rapists. In response to that, Mace on a rapist on LSD is like water. Things like that single case keep handguns on our streets. What it all boils down to is that handguns are made for killing people, so why does the U.S. Government have such a hard time getting rid of them? Some people don't realize that it isn't just those 13 people at Columbine who died, there are massive amounts of daily killings within gang wars and such. The press just doesn't publicize this because you are grabbed by innocent children being killed, but not gang members. I feel that handguns need to be taken off our streets and that no one should possess them. This is a basic argument, there are no incredible details about law enforcement situations, but I would truly appreciate any comments on the subject. I don't like seeing people get hurt, not many people do, however, I fear that if handguns aren't disposed of, it might take the death of a person close to a Congressmen/women for enough action to be taken. I do not wish to see this, I don't think anyone does, please, help me here, write your congresspeople and ask them what's going on. And please, if you have any ideas, contrary to my own or in support, please share them. Thank you for your time.
