Excellent article Joan! It's nice to see a great newspaper like the Washington Times recognizing your talent. :-)

Probably didn't have enough slant and hyperbole for the Washington Post to publish. <vbg>

Have a safe trip and do be careful!

Michael

Jeez Joan, I was asking about you too, now I feel snubbed. Don't worry, I've been snubbed by lower than you. Willie the Wino wouldn't share what he got out of the dumpster.

So this Chechnya-Dagestan is a bad deal. Do you think it will escalate? Have you noticed that since Clinton formed the IPI we are getting a lot less news from overseas?

Yes, Joan, I really, really missed you. I was afraid that you had gone off and left us, but I am glad to see that you are busy, and active, and contributing to the wider world. Hope you will have more time for us in the future.

Your article is very well-written, and thought-provoking. It reminds me of the sentiments expressed towards Middle Easterners during the hostage crisis. I hope the racist rhetoric doesn't find its way into action, I am thinking about the anti-Turkish violence in Germany, for example.

Russia seems to be in so much of a mess, which is unfortunate because we have had such high hopes for them.

It is ironic that the Russians call Caucasians "blacks," isn't it?

Sorry I let my subscription to the Washington Times lapse, we are moving, so I thought I'd just resubscribe at the new house. Now I'll have to get a photocopy. And write a letter to the editor telling them how much I liked it.

Good article. Which reminds me: there are a few questions I wouldn't mind asking, if you have the time. Not that I will ever understand what's going on there, but I'm trying to fill the picture out a little.

First, I have the impression that Islam in Chechnya and Dagestan has traditionally been Sufi, with pre-Islamic beliefs filtering in to a strong degree (not unlike Islam in Indonesia, which would be unrecognizable to a Saudi mullah). Is this anywhere near truth?

Second, what role is Wahhabi Islam playing in the post-Russian Chechen picture? Is there really a Muslim extremist power-grab going on? If so, to what extent does it affect Dagestan?

If the Russian pullout results in the development of a fundamentalist Wahhabi state, how would the mythical average Chechen/Dagestani feel about that? These cultures have a long history of resisting intrusion by anybody, would they see Muslim fundamentalists from the north as appreciably different from Russian intruders from the north?

What role are outside Muslim fundamentalists, particularly the Taleban, playing in the mix?

Do you see any viable middle ground between Russian domination and fundamentalist Islamic domination?

I can think of others, but that will be quite enough for now....

An excellent article, Joan, and a thought-provoking one as well. I won't pepper you with questions, since Steve has already asked the most salient ones.
