Hi Alan,

If the system currently has a P133, the chances that the motherboard can support a 233MMX are slim to none. You'll most likely need a new motherboard, new CPU, and probably new RAM as well. You might want to consider getting a Celeron based system, keep your current monitor, and sell your old box for $100 or so.

You'll definitely want to upgrade the video card as well. Chances are it's a regular 1Mg PCI card...for most games today you need at least a 8Mg AGP card.

So much for a small little upgrade. <g>

Rich

TA

Is the installation fairly straightforward and simple

Never upgraded a CPU myself but I'm sure others here have...

I upgraded a P100 to 233mmx... was very easy and I did notice a difference. I used Evergreen b/c I was upgrading a socket 5 cpu...intel only works w/ socket 7 and costs more.

I'm going to get an upgrade chip

We *upgraded* a bunch of 386 machines to 486 machines _a while back_ using some kind of *upgrade* chip. It was a waste of time and money.

If you upgrade, save yourself from major headaches and buy a ready to use aftermarket upgrade kit like (an example, not a suggestion):

And do your son a favor: buy some memory while you're at it. P133 used to be sold with around 16 Mb which is pretty much useless these days. There is a lot of swapping going on with 16 Mb. Go 64 Mb minimum.

I'm pretty sure your video card doesn't do 3D acceleration, therefore it's pretty much useless with today's games. You can always add a simple 3D add-on card (based on the Voodoo chip, it use your current card for 2D). They are getting cheap these days (an example, not a suggestion):

The original Monster 3D from Diamond is the best of that dying category.

But I would go for a card with much bigger memory (a least 16 Mb) and a better (newer) engine. Just make sure it is in PCI format. There is no chance that your P133 have AGP. That will require a new motherboard (which is also a good upgrade option). Check out site like:

for video cards review.

Maybe you'll find out that damn Sega Dreamcast is not so expensive after all. :)
