Roebear, The story has been on the wires since yesterday. The only reason I brought it up was that today Bill Richardson said he would consider Schumers proposal and was "somewhat sympathetic", to it. I'll bet oil bears will try to grab a hold of the story and try and make something of it.

But I can't think of ANYTHING more designed to unify the ME part of OPEC than for a man of his constituency to say that OPEC was declaring "economic war" against the U.S.. And for the energy secratary to go along with it? Whooooooaaaaah. Bill Richardson needs to tread VERRRRRRY carefully here. The arabs in OPEC may not say much in public, but Good God Senator Schumer think about what you are saying.

Not only that, Chavez is finally making a trip to NY, after having been thoroughly snubbed by the Clinton Administration after his election. Shades of Fidels trip in the 60's. OPEC "declaring economic war" against the U.S.? Maybe Senator Schumer would be willing to pay Venezuela's vast debts out of his own pockets?

Senator Schumer and Secretary Richardson have, imo, made a colossal political blunder here. It may take some real quick stepping to hush this one up. I thought the policy was divide and conquor not unite and get your but kicked.
