All indications on fab and fab equipment earthquake damage is minimal. The wafers in process are another story. Is the back end assembly scenario different then front end?

Bob, CEO Morgan of Applied Materials said yesterday 'Nobody has a clue yet about any damage to fabrication lines. Our equipment survived an earthquake in Silicon valley of similar magnitude without a lot of problems.

Bob,

Don't you think you're getting a tad carried away.

Have you seen a single news report where a fab was structurally damaged? I haven't.

Have you seen a news report indicating that a single fab worker was injured much less killed? I haven't.

While it's tragic that more than 1700 people lost their lives, there are several million on the island. It's not as if the earthquake selectively attacked the Fab structures and employees.

Are you absolutely certain that no chipmaker has any cash, short term investments or lines of credit in existence? I'm certain they all have at least one of the above. It's just a prudent business practice.

In other words Bob, I believe that your suspicions are unfounded in entirety and are unduly pessimistic.

Taiwan does not represent the world's entire chip supply; nor will more than a few weeks of production be lost. Nor is there any certainty that any specific quarter's results will be impacted.

Ian.
