OK, I give up. What do Outlook and ACT do?

ACT was the first program I installed after buying my old IBM 486 in '92. It is a data base management program designed to handle prospects and customers. I could not run my business without it.

BTW, both ACT and Quicken keep updating with whistles and bells for the internet, when what they both need is better word processing programs. I am really incensed that you cannot cut and paste a report in Quicken.

chaz, you obviously are not in sales <g>.

Act! is one of the original "contact managers". Organizes your phone book, to do list, issues, etc.

Outlook is also a contact manager, with integrated e-mail, and great internal search engines.

They both work with Palm Pilots so that the two (Palm Pilot and the contact manager on your PC) stay in synch without double entry.

OT.....What do Outlook and ACT do? ..OT

Lindy already covered off ACT and I will do a brief on Outlook. MS Outlook comes in several flavors: Outlook 97, 98, 2000 and the freebie Outlook Express. Outlook is essentially an e-mail client with extra functionality as indicated below and has some great sorting features by using rules, especially for junk mail.
----------
Microsoft© Outlook© messaging and collaboration capabilities are:Electronic mail, Personal calendar and group scheduling,Personal information such as contacts and tasks, Custom collaboration and information-sharing applications, Outlook helps users organize, find and view all of this information all in one place using a consistent interface.
-----
In summary Outlook is an e-mail client that MS took from MS Mail to Exchange and built the capabilities around with a calendar, task lists and etc. that works very well with the rest of the MS Office Family and is used mostly in the corporate world with Outlook 97, 98 and now 2000.

Outlook express: FREE (when downloading IE ): mostly used as a news group reader:
It can be launched from the MS IE 4.0 or 5.0 Tools pull down menu ( if originally installed with outlook express / newsgroup reader during download of MS IE )

Outlook Express is the full, Internet standards-based e-mail client that is included with standard or full installations of Internet Explorer 4.0. 5.0

Chaz,

<< What do Outlook and ACT do? >>

Sorry about that.

Outlook is Microsoft's high end e-mail client (comparable to Qualcomm Eudora) but on steroids since it is also a Personal Information Manager (PIM) that acts as a database, scheduler, etc. It is now a part of the Microsoft Office Suite in MSO 2000. Typically if you are running IE 5 and MSO 2000 (or earlier versions) you will use Outlook (rather than Outlook Express) as mail client

ACT! is Symantec's Contact Management software. It is a specialized database for managing contacts which integrates with Word and Outlook. Very widely used in sales. It is one of those applications that successfully migrated from DOS to Windows.
