Telephone Calls to Taiwan Soar after Quake 23/09/1999, updated at 16:00 Telephone Calls to Taiwan Soar after Quake Telephone calls from Beijing to Taiwan soared to 510,000 between 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday and 7:00 a.m. Wednesday after an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter Scale jolted Taiwan early September 21 morning. The number of telephone calls was five times the average daily volume, according to the Beijing International Telecommunications Center. The center has adopted measures to ensure the smooth operation of the circuits between Beijing and Taiwan, however, only one- tenth of the attempted calls were put through because of the serious damage to telecommunications equipment in Taiwan. According to the latest reports, the powerful quake has killed more than 1,700 people and injured over 4,000.
