Hi Jim,

I'll try to dig up some references in support of my position. I didn't think I was making a controversial statement. You may be right that my information is dated. Certainly I was not just thinking about open-air nuke testing when I wrote what I did but the military may have cleaned up their act in other respects as well (bio-degradable shells maybe?) :-)

By the way, which DOE messes were you thinking of? Frankly, I don't care which part of the government you give the 'credit' to but the DOE messes that I can think of were directly related to weapons production.

I agree with your second point. If environmentalists use non-libertarian means to achieve their ends, of course their actions are incompatible with libertarianism. The point I was trying to make was a little different. I believe that environmentalism is not incompatible with libertarianism because I believe it is possible to achieve the objectives of environmentalism without violating libertarian principals.

There are libertarians who care about the environment just as there are libertarians who care about the sick, the poor, the handicapped, those who are discriminated against, the hungry, etc. We can care about these issues without supporting the use of government force to resolve them. There are effective libertarian solutions to these problems.

Dave
