Folks,

There is something funny about the article and not being able to use the 3rd RIMM slot. First of all you can only put up to 32 devices on a Rambus channel due to a device addressiblity limit in the Rambus protocol. So, since the current Rdrams are 128MBit, the max memory that you can put on a channel is 512MByte and everyone should have know this for 2 years.

The second issue is how many Rdrams can you put on a RIMM. In theory you can put 4, 8, 12, 16. If you can put 16 Rdrams on a RIMM then you can only use 2 RIMM slots anyway so there is no big deal about not being able to use the 3rd slot.

If, however, 16 or 12 Rdrams on a RIMM doesn't work due to electrical problems, then with 3 slots and 8 Rdrams per slot you'd have 384 MByte Max memory. And if the 3rd slot doesn't work then you'd be limited to 256MByte Max.

Sorry about all these numbers but what I'm getting at is that there are two possibilites:
1. There is no change. Camino has always been limited to 512MByte max memory and always will be. Maybe some people just found that out but they should have known it all along.
2. Due to electrical problems the Vancouver mobo is limited to 256MByte max (not 512 as the article says) memory and this would be a bad shock.

I've heard through a reliable source that Intel is telling people that the 3rd slot can't be used. But in case 1. you don't need it so it's not a big deal. Later today we should find out which case it is. There is some chance that the current uproar is just due to misunderstanding.
