A free market in money!? We haven't had that since before the Roman Republic in the West and Kubla Khan in the East.

I agree that these market mechanics may have little effect on the price other than a short term fluctuation. Who know, though, maybe this is the Claymore which blows up the shorts.

There is the wide spread perception that inflation is good for gold and that's borne out by recent history. However, deflation is actually a very good phenomenon for the relative buying power of gold - cf. Roy Jastrom's "The Golden Constant".
