Jack, the SDMI announced yesterday that the Aris watermarking technology (an embedded bit of data that marks a file as copyrighted) will be available for license on Oct. 1st. This means that phase one hand held players, etc. can now be produced. These players will be capable of detecting the watermark. When phase 2 is deployed, only SDMI-compliant players will be able to utilize the watermarked files. The availability of the watermark technology means that upgradeable players can now be brought to market. These players can later be made phase 2 compliant, probably by the purchase and installation of some extra software. Hope this helps,
