Packers place TE Chmura on injured reserve with neck injury

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN (TICKER) -- Green Bay Packers tight end Mark Chmura, who spent much of the exhibition season contemplating retirement after suffering a neck injury, today was placed on injured reserve and is out for the season.

Packers general manager Ron Wolf announced the decision this afternoon, citing "some recurrent symptoms from (Chmura's) neck injury." The three-time Pro Bowl tight end will undergo additional tests over the next two weeks to determine the extent of the possible career-ending injury.

The 30-year-old Chmura, who signed a contract extension through 2003 in October, suffered a stinger and temporarily lost feeling in his arms during last Sunday's loss to the Lions.

Chmura was urged by his wife, Lynda, to retire during training camp, when he suffered from neck and back problems. This year, he has five catches for 55 yards and is fourth among tight ends in Packers history with 188 career receptions.

To fill Chmura's roster spot, Green Bay activated linebacker Jude Waddy. Waddy had been serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's steroid policy.
