You are incorrect on a couple of points.

1. Todays wireless 'phone is a real computer. Most of them have at least two.

2. A full OS is used.

I think you are confusing the Windows look and feel (the user interface) with an operating system (DOS) that Windows as you perceive it 'sits on top of'.

The actual technology that has to run on these machines is not very intense. (At least at this time)
