And, with all due respect, unless you are Jesus or Moses or Buddha, you can't provide the truth to me. So, save your breath (virtual breath ;) ).

That's an interesting twist on an argument, but not very meaningful in this context. You missed a great chance, unfortunately. I laid the seeds. I had hoped that someone would catch the obvious response, but it's not gonna happen, so I'll offer it:

The phrase to which you've responded was a direct quotation with attribution. The subtle and clever response (something not common on this or most SI threads) would have been to note that the character who made that statement was, in fact, the one who could not handle the truth. It was Nicholson's character who asked the dramatic question. But his character existed in a mythic realm and was unable to grasp the situation. Cruise's character, could, in fact, "handle the truth" as had been amply shown in the rest of the story.

The phrase remains a telling indictment of the fantasy that many on this thread mistake for "the truth", but the context gives it that wonderful subtlety that helps us all to recognize that few, if any of us, can "handle the truth".

Could anyone lay such seeds or suggest such uncommon wit as him?(LOL).

Possible meanings for "can't handle the truth":
1. Handle as in control; You cannot control the truth
1. After reading his jargon I finally was able to tell what he meant by it: He meant another definition of handle. Definition 3 is the "handle" he meant.
2. You'd convulse and die if you had a handle on the truth for a sec.
-----------------------------------------------------------
3. Handle as in get a hold of; Get a hold of the truth.
3. He is saying that it's 100% impossible for you and many other people to know the truth about the issue. Only he and others can know the truth. Sorry, no specified reason he is just right. Move on to another issue in which it might be possible for you to know the truth on.
-----------------------------------------------------------
4. Handle the truth; Understand the truth.
4. Their is a small chance he meant this but it's not a definition of the word handle.

I am very relieved that I now understand why I am so annoyed when people say "I can't handle the truth". All quotes are really starting to bother me!
