I'm not at all sure that it is possible to degrade politics. Nor am I convinced that politics has descended into filth, as some would have us imagine. A close look at, for example, the McKinley administration leaves the impression that things are a good deal better than they once were. Not because politicians have improved, of course. They haven't. But they are under closer scrutiny than they once were.

I am not saying that it is impossible for a politician to behave, just that they will only behave if the risk of misbehaviour outweighs the gain. Only constant and effective scrutiny will keep them under control.

I do not trust either of our major political parties at all, which is why I hate the idea of seeing either of them in full control of government.
