Well, most of the "social conservatives" agree that the government has become too intrusive, and value the free- market. However, a lot of them are Evangelicals and Catholics who voted Democratic until sometime in the last 20 years, which is why some are susceptible to the strange brew of social issues and populism cooked up by Buchanan. On the other hand, the majority would be so distrustful of the Left that they would be skeptical of environmentalism, for example. As I said, most of those who are narrowly "social conservatives" would support vouchers and favor the abolition of the Department of Education. And they would distrust "The Nanny State",at this point. However, the emphasis is on "family values", not fighting campaign finance reform (which a minority would support) or the attack on tobacco (again, which a minority would support). So, the overall philosophical underpinning would be what supports the traditional morality and family cohesion, as the organizing principle....
