Oh yeah, there are mathematics... but just as a sort of adjunct to the central theme. And there is all these things where you wonder about whether they are fiction or not. I'm trying to figure out if a "Dr. Jamf" ever existed... I know the Pavlovian institute was real, there is all this sort of "enhanced biography" stuff.

A smallish point about the book, I would say, is the way Pynchon presents women. This has been a pet peeve of mine in the past, particularly with books written before, say, 1980 - even thoughtful authors will depict women as one dimensional characters. Clavell for example in his Iran helicopter book (Whirlwind)... which was a pretty good book... but the women were always taking baths and watching their breasts float above the bubbles - stupid stuff like that. Pynchon is not like that, he has a lot of women, not the main characters but they are all interesting. GR is a guys book, its full of sex... that makes it a guys book right? lol
