I would like to know if Joan thinks that the breakup of the U.S.S.R. was good in the long run. I wonder if those who lost loved ones in Yugoslavia and Chechnya think that it was. Are we going to see an endless stream of these types of conflicts now that they can't be immediately stopped like they once were?

I think that the breakup would have happened anyway, but may have been accelerated by the arms race. Who knows. I think that Reagan had a simplistic "good guy bad guy" view of us and the U.S.S.R. that came from his simplistic movies. I don't think that he realized that his movies were make believe, and neither did a lot of those who admire him.
