I think there is a way to make SI work without cookies. You might want to ask Bryan. I could have sworn there was an option in the configuration section or something....

BTW doubleclick is the company that really comes right up against the line of these privacy concerns. Dclk keeps a cookie on your system that keeps tabs on every site you have ever visited or clicked on and serves up ads dedicated to your target market. Its quite effective, I notice I see a lot of ads for local gallery openings and the like.

A real problem is that if you happen to pull up a webpage that is somehow distasteful to you, all of the sudden you receive spam and ads that may be objectionable. For example I have received spam from a few pro-life organizations, I know because I once clicked on the Heritage Society site for info. It goes both ways and I think also applies to pornograpy. So, I agree with you that the net data collection is worse than prior methods in terms of privacy invasion.
