snippets from PCS '99 (New Orleans last week) from CSFB's Cynthia Motz:

WorldCom's Bernie Ebbers offers bullish outlook on wireless
The conference concluded on Friday with a bullish presentation on the future of
wireless by WorldCom president and CEO Bernie Ebbers. While there was ab-solutely
no mention of news reports which surfaced that morning as to WorldCom
holding talks to acquire Sprint (and with it, Sprint PCS), Ebbers acknowledged the
growth potential of wireless in the future, at one point commenting “we better get
busy,” presumably with regard to a wireless acquisition. Ebbers proposed the
idea that there is no such thing as too much capacity in telecommunications, be-cause
our “insatiable need for information” will lead us to develop applications
that will stimulate more demand. While expressing confidence that demand for
data will continue to explode, Ebbers endorsed forecasts of U.S. wireless pene-tration
reaching 70% by 2007. Ebbers believes that success in wireless, along
with the rest of telecom, will ultimately belong to those companies that are fo-cused
on their customers' needs, rather than technology: “Technology is the tail,
not the dog... make it the dog, and it will take you for a ride.” Ebbers stated that
customers want simplified solutions that can be used anytime, anywhere, with
open systems, and the option to pay on a usage basis or with one flat rate.
