China is taking a better path- China in time will change, and in our lifetime. Into what- I can't tell you- but the present system will collapse. But the Chinese are more prepared, for many reasons. Although I would not wish to see the Chinese system collapse overnight either. I think another 20 years of wane would be nice.

No- collapse is the wrong word- I prefer "mutate"- and I hope it happens that way.

Hi Edwarda - forgive me for sounding like the broken record here (this mainly for X, anyway) --

Ending slavery too abrupt -- they weren't ready for it yet
Ending segregation was too abrupt -- ditto
Ending colonialism was too abrupt -- ditto

Strong cases for all of the above and more -- and, yet -- consensus was: It's the right thing to do.

Although it often becomes a bit of a mess -- sometimes a really, really BIG mess -- what is the legitimate alternative? Life is not a dress rehearsal -- sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Anyone care to advance a proposal of what course should have been supported as the USSR imploded?

Mike
