Oh yeah... thats been going on forever. But I think the real motivation for it was water. Maybe someone else knows more about this. But N Ca sends its water to S Ca and that was always a huge bone of contention. N Ca was always threatening to split over it. But then, somewhere along the line, someone really really smart determined that residential and business water use combined is 5% of farm usage or some fraction like that. And farming here is kind of a remnant from the past, where all of these thirsty crops (like RICE if you can believe that) were encouraged irrespective of water. So, thats my rather peripheral take on things. No split of North and South... just a clean break from the mainland on y2k resulting in a floating island that attaches itself to Washington...
