I hope your contempt for prostitutes is not based on your experience but merely on your prejudice. I've known several hundred prostitutes in several different countries over the last 50 years. Most of them working girls. Many of them young and fresh from the country or the slums. Many of them working mothers, A few older, experienced madams. To my mind, the critical thing is the national culture and its tolerance for prostitution and poverty and the alternatives available for poor women. I never knew a Thai prostitute I didn't like and trust as a person -- but that was long ago. Maybe things are different know. Every American prostitute I've known was nonstereotypical. Especially the immigrants. Maybe I was just lucky -- but there were many novels there and some very good people.
