While I loathe him, Pat's a menace precisely because he's not an idiot but he's plainly unbalanced in thinking that he's in any way electable, and fully demagogic in the way he appeals to tribalism and for what can only be described as autocracy.

That said, Pat's historical views on republic v. empire are not so ridiculous as he is, in fact his views have been espoused by many historians from both the left and right. The NYT even had an article about that yesterday - "A Fair Reading of History" in which academic historians make that very point.

Parenti is an ideologue and far far worse than Buchanan, as your initial post details.
